Dewar invites community to screening of “Finding Dawn”
Event will raise funds for the Kelly Morrisseau Education Fund
OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) invites the community to a screening of Canadian film “Finding Dawn” on Wednesday October 7 at Carleton University. The event will raise public awareness about the tragic cases of 500+ missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada, particularly Gatineau woman Kelly Morrisseau.
“It’s been over two years since the death of a young woman from Ottawa, Kelly Morrisseau” Dewar stated in the House of Commons today. “Ms. Morrisseau, a mother of three, was found murdered in Gatineau Park. Her case remains unsolved. Her tragic death is an example of the violence faced by aboriginal women in Canada”.
The event will accept donations to the Kelly Morrisseau Education Fund, established by Paul Dewar, for the benefit of Ms. Morrisseau’s children.
“Finding Dawn” is a documentary by Canadian filmmaker Christine Welsh on the national tragedy of murdered and missing Aboriginal women. The film ends with a message of shared responsibility and hope for ending violence against Aboriginal women.
“I invite the community to join us at this event and call upon this House and the government to take action so all Aboriginal women and their families can find justice and safety in our communities” concluded Dewar’s statement to the House of Commons.
