Dewar in Lebanon to monitor elections

BEIRUT – New Democrat Foreign Affairs critic Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) has been assigned to election observation in Bekaa Valley region of Lebanon. Country’s national elections take place on June 7.

“This looks like a very close election that will have a major impact on the region” said Dewar. “With Canada having a large Lebanese Diaspora, this will be an important election for Canadians as well.”

Dewar is the only Canadian parliamentarian on the high-level international delegation to Lebanon.

Bekaa Valley is one of Lebanon’s most important agricultural centres. It is a hot spot of political activity prior to the general elections, recently witnessing conflict between opposing coalitions.

“I look forward to help ensure a smooth election in Bekaa Valley,” said Dewar. “These are important elections in Lebanon and the world is watching closely.”
